Rikki is a native of ICELAND !

The outdoor recreational opportunities and the the relaxed mountain lifestyle are big reasons why many people love Montana and want to live here or have a second home here. If you love the outdoors too, you'll feel right at home in the Madison valley. Ennis is surrounded by three  mountain ranges: the Madison Range, the Gravelly Range, and the Tobacco Root Mountains. In addition to its stunning mountain views, Ennis also offers access to some of the finest Trout waters in the state by way of the Monther Madison River. Also, just west of Ennis lie the famed western towns of Virginia City and Nevada City.

Fly Fishing - The Madison River is one of the best Trout streams in North America and it flows right through Ennis. However, the great fishing doesn't end there...Ennis is an easy day trip from the Big Hole, Beaverhead, Ruby, Jefferson, Gallatin, and Yellowstone Rivers just to name a few. There are also countless creeks, reservoirs, and high-alpine lakes to explore. Contact Montana Trout Stalkers to learn more or to arrange a guided trip.

Snowshoeing up to the Sphinx on a beautiful winter day

Skiing - Winter can be long in Montana but that's o.k. because they can be just as much fun as summer. Bridger Bowl ski mountain, known for its extreme ridge-top chutes as well as for its unpretentiousness, is just 15 minutes from downtown Bozeman. Big Sky ski resort is a little further, about 75 miles, although you can see Lone Peak from many parts of the Madison valley. Cross-country trails abound. Bohart Ranch is a popular cross-country skiing venue near Bridger Bowl. Of course you can always go off trail on you own on either cross country skis or snowshoes. To learn more about Montana's winter activities, please visit the Montana Winter Website.

Hiking/Biking - Of course the opportunities here are practically endless. See what you can discover in the vast expanses of the Beaverhead/Deerlodge National Forest.

Whitewater Rafting - The Beartrap Canyon of the Madison river offers some exciting whitewater as well as blue ribbon Trout fishing. There is also good rafting and Kayaking on the nearby Gallatin River.

Parks & forests - Of course Montana is home to two of our nations most beautiful and well know National Parks. Yellowstone National Park is just a short 70 mile trip from Ennis, and Glacier National Park is about a 6 hour worthwhile trip to the Northwest corner of the state. Immediately surrounding Ennis and the Madison Valley is the Beaverhead/Deerlodge National Forest. These public lands are some of our nations most scenic and abound in recreational opportunities.

Scenic Drives - The Gravelly Range Road extends 50 miles south from Ennis along the spine of the Gravelly Range in the Beaverhead/Deerlodge Nat'l Forest. This road offers beautiful scenic vistas as well as opportunities to witness some this regions abundant big game animals. Of course there are many other scenic drives to take in the region of Montana. Just get in the car and go!

Hot Springs - Ennis has two commercial hot springs in the nearby area. Bozeman Hot Springs, on 191 just west of Bozeman, caters to the family crowd. Norris Hot Springs, about 15 minutes from Ennis, offers a large outdoor wooden pool and attracts a laid-back clientele.

Cultural Attractions - Virginia City is a well-preserved old west gold mining town. VC has the kind of wild west history that became the stuff of legend. Besides a series of old shops and buildings that make up the ghost town portion of Main St., Virginia City has an amazing candy store, a great restaurant in Bandito's, an authentic western bar, and a excellent museum. It also has two great live theatrical groups. Every season, the Virginia City Players perform an historic melodrama, which is followed after intermission with a vaudeville show. The vaudeville portion has been so popular that it produced a spin-off company, the Brewery Follies, which performs only vaudeville. Virginia City is about 15 miles west from Ennis.

Of course there are lots of other diversions too: parades, festivals, rodeos, and fairs. But you don't really have to do anything to enjoy yourself in Ennis. Whether it's hanging out in the Pharmacy or watching the sunset down by the river, sometimes the most fun can be had doing nothing.
