Origins
of Ennis - The town of Ennis was named for William Ennis who
was one of the first white men to locate in the Madison valley. He was
born in Ireland and came to Montana in 1863. In 1879 he built a store in
the Madison valley. He became the first postmaster of Ennis in in 1881,
and his family continued to run the post office for the next 86 years. In 1898, William Ennis was shot in Virginia City by an angry neighbor who was supposedly upset over some unfounded rumors that Ennis had bad mouthed his character. He died of his wounds in Ennis on July 4th, 1898.
